At Oxbow Adventure Co., we're all about offering high-octane fun, unforgettable memories, and a team environment that thrives on passion and energy. Part of that energy comes from the fresh talent we welcome through our door— like Dana & Donovan, who are both currently working with us as an Intern which is a part of her Diploma in Adventure Tourism Management with Queenstown Resort College.
From thrilling outdoor experiences to top-tier customer service, Dana’s internship is a full immersion into the world of adventure tourism. As Dana has been here for 6 months, we had a bit of a catch up of how her time with us has been.
So, what does a typical day on internship at Oxbow look like? “It starts with the team hopping in the van together and heading out to Gibbston Valley,” Dana shares. “It’s a great way to catch up and set a positive tone for the day.”
Once on-site, the Oxbow crew kicks things off by prepping for the day ahead — from briefing schedules to assigning tasks. Dana’s role covers all the action behind the scenes and on the frontline: helping with guest check-ins, gearing up customers, delivering safety briefings, and making sure every visitor is strapped in for adventure.
Throughout the day, Dana’s constantly learning — from logistics and operations to sharing local knowledge and delivering exceptional customer service. “Each day is different,” she says. “It’s hands-on, it’s fast-paced, and I’m constantly applying what I’ve learned in my studies in a real-world environment.”
What is one of the biggest highlights of Dana’s internship? Getting involved with the world’s only commercial Jet Sprint Boats.
“Being part of something so unique and adrenaline-packed has been unforgettable,” Dana says. “Helping guests get prepped, hearing their reactions after the ride — it’s such a buzz knowing I’ve played a part in creating that experience.”
It’s not only the guests that leave a mark — Dana says working alongside such a passionate and skilled team has also been a huge part of her journey.
“Be proactive and open to learning,” she says. “Don’t be afraid to ask questions or put your hand up for new opportunities. Everyone starts small, but the more involved you get, the more you’ll grow.”
One major learning from Dana’s time at Oxbow has been the balance between thrill and safety.
“Whether it's clay target shooting, off-roading, or jet sprinting, safety always comes first,” Dana says. “It's not just about regulations — it's about building trust with guests. She also notes how important clear communication is — with both customers and teammates — to ensure everything runs smoothly and everyone’s on the same page.
“The best part about being based in Queenstown and the Gibbston Valley? The views!”. Every day starts with incredible scenery. It lifts your mood before you even clock in.”
Thanks to her time at QRC, Dana stepped into her internship confident and ready to roll and we have certainly seen her confidence improve even more since working with us. Everyone has thoroughly enjoyed having Dana as part of the team.
